All change for buses in Wolverhampton city centre
4th April 2010
People in Wolverhampton will need to catch their bus from temporary stops in the city centre from Easter Sunday (4 April 2010) to make way for the redevelopment of the existing bus station into a new state-of-the-art passenger facility.
Bus stops and shelters are being installed on Queen Street, Pipers Row, Stafford Street, Tower Street, Princess Street and Darlington Street to provide drop off and pick up points for the bus and coach services that normally use the bus station.
A special Wolverhampton map and guide has been produced for passengers giving details of where all buses will stop in the city centre while the bus station is closed for development.
It is available to view now online Click for website and will be available from libraries, the Travel Shop at the bus station and the information centre in the Art Gallery from 22 March 2010.
The Travel Shop, where people can pick up public transport information and bus and coach tickets will relocate to 22 Queen Square when the bus station closes.
There will also be some changes to the stopping locations for buses that normally serve Wolverhampton's main streets, ensuring everyone has access to a nearby bus stop and traffic continues to flow effcetively around the city centre.
The existing bus station is closing end of service on 3rd April to allow for the construction of a new high quality passenger facility and associated works for Wolverhampton which forms the £21m phase one of the city's Interchange scheme.
Project partners Wolverhampton City Council, transport authority Centro and developer Neptune are working together with local bus operators to ensure minimum disruption for people and businesses while the redevelopment takes place.
Geoff Inskip, Chief Executive of Centro said: "I'm delighted that work on Wolverhampton's new state-of-the-art bus station is about to begin. It marks the important first phase of the project to provide a vibrant world class transport interchange for the city centre.
"Wolverhampton has the busiest bus station in the region and we have worked closely with Wolverhampton City Council and the bus operators to provide the best possible stopping solutions on street for people in the city to try and keep disruption to a minimum while the new high-quality passenger facility is created."
Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Enterprise Councillor Paddy Bradley, also welcomed the news that work is starting.
"Spring is traditionally a time for new growth and new beginnings and the bus station is a prime example of our commitment to make even more progress in improving the city centre.
"I hope that people will be patient with the inevitable disruption whilst this huge project takes shape because the end result will be well worth it.
"Our new bus station will be a high quality landmark development that will lead to further regeneration in the city centre and beyond," she added.
There will also be a series of exhibitions in the city centre during week commencing 22 March, where people can go along and get details of bus stopping locations, pick up a map and guide and ask questions to staff.
These will take place at:
Bus station - 27, 29, 31 March, 1, 2, 3, 4 April
Queen Square - 5, 6, 11 April
Wulfrun Centre - 10 April
Customer service staff will also be on hand at key locations around the city centre while the existing bus station is closed to assist passengers on where to board their bus.
Information about the bus stop arrangements, the public information exhibitions and other details of the Wolverhampton Interchange scheme are available at local travel information website Click for website
Preparatory work on the interchange scheme started in mid-November and it is hoped that the new bus station will be open for business during 2011 after a 15 month construction period.
